For Hmong, also called Miao, as for Karens, the body of a healthy person has several souls. During an illness, physical or psychological, it is one or more souls that move away or leave the body. After a ceremony of calling the soul, the shaman then puts back a padlock which holds the soul, thus protecting the person who carries it.
