Les Karen – aussi appelés Kayin, Kariang ou Kawthoolese – forment un groupe ethnique d’Asie du Sud-Est comptant environ 5 à 6 millions de personnes.
Originaires du Myanmar (Birmanie), ils vivent principalement dans l’État de Kayin au sud-ouest du pays, mais sont également très nombreux en Thaïlande, notamment près de la frontière, où beaucoup ont fui les conflits et les persécutions.

Une histoire marquée par la résistance
The history of Karens is long and rich, and we are not going to develop everything here, but some events are important. In 1947, they could not participate in the creation of the Burmese state with Aung San (father of Aung San Su Ki). They therefore created the KNU: Karen National Union .
Les Karen sont majoritairement bouddhistes theravāda, mais leur spiritualité reste profondément animiste.
Le culte des ancêtres est omniprésent, et l’on trouve dans chaque foyer une maison aux esprits où l’on dépose des offrandes.

Comme l'ethnie Hmong, les Karen croient que chaque personne possède plusieurs âmes dans son corps. Une maladie ou un malheur survient lorsque certaines âmes s’éloignent ; et lorsque toutes s’en vont, c’est la mort physique.

Environ un quart des Karen sont chrétiens, mais là encore, les croyances animistes s’entrelacent pour former une foi mystique profondément enracinée.
Weaving
Karens are very recognizable by their traditional clothes: a kind of tunic large enough for the top and a loincloth sewn in tube for the bottom. The white dress is reserved for girls before their wedding.
Women make this garment themselves on their looms. Each woman has one and weaving is a very important activity in the community. This maintains social ties and cultural identity.
The Karens are renowned craftsmanship, they work on rattan, bamboo, weaving, but also, in a village in northern Thailand, they are recognized and excellent in the traditional art of silver jewelry of ethnic groups of the golden triangle.
